Track My Ship

What does RTO mean in courier tracking?

RTO means return to origin: the courier is sending your parcel back to the sender. Why it happens, whether it can be stopped, and what to do next.

By Track My Ship · Published

In short: RTO means return to origin: the courier could not deliver the parcel and is sending it back to the sender. It usually happens after failed delivery attempts, an address that couldn't be found, or a refused parcel. Contact the courier straight away — it can sometimes be stopped early — and contact the seller or sender, who arranges a re-send or a refund.

What RTO means

In courier tracking, origin is the place the parcel came from — the seller's warehouse or the sender's booking branch. RTO (return to origin) means the courier has stopped trying to deliver and the parcel is travelling back there. You might see it written as "RTO", "RTO initiated", "returned to origin", "return to shipper" or "returning to sender", depending on the courier.

Once a parcel is RTO, the tracking shows its journey back, and finally a scan such as "RTO delivered" when the sender receives it.

Why parcels go RTO

  • Failed delivery attempts: nobody was available at the address, or the phone number wasn't reachable, on each attempt.
  • Address problems: the address was incomplete, wrong or couldn't be found.
  • Refused delivery: the receiver declined the parcel at the door.
  • Cash on delivery (COD) not paid: for COD orders, payment wasn't made at delivery.
  • Cancelled order: the seller or buyer cancelled while the parcel was already on its way.
  • Restricted or damaged items: the courier can't deliver the contents to that area, or the packaging was damaged in transit.

The scan just before "RTO" in the tracking history usually shows which of these happened.

Can RTO be stopped?

Sometimes. If the return was only just started and the parcel is still at your local branch, the courier may be able to cancel it and deliver to you — especially if the problem was a wrong address or an unreachable phone number that you can correct. Contact the courier's customer care quickly with your tracking number. Once the parcel has left the area, it usually has to complete the return.

What to do when your parcel shows RTO

  1. Look at the last few scans on Track My Ship to understand why it was returned.
  2. Contact the courier to ask whether the return can be stopped and the parcel redelivered.
  3. If you bought it online, contact the seller. Depending on the seller's policy, they will re-send the item once it is back, or process a refund. For prepaid orders, ask how and when the refund will be made.
  4. If you sent the parcel, it will come back to you or your booking branch; ask the courier about any return charges and whether you can re-send it with a corrected address.

How to avoid RTO

  • Write a complete address with a landmark and PIN code — see how to write a delivery address in India.
  • Give a phone number you will answer, plus an alternate number if possible.
  • Keep an eye on the tracking. When a parcel is out for delivery but not delivered, respond after the first failed attempt rather than waiting.
  • For cash-on-delivery orders, keep the payment ready.
