In short: "Out for delivery" means the parcel left the local branch with a delivery person that day. If it didn't arrive, the next tracking scan usually explains why (for example "consignee not available" or "address incomplete"). Most couriers try again on the next working day; contact the courier with your tracking number if you need to give a better address or phone number, or if nothing updates for 48 hours.
What "Out for delivery" means
When your parcel reaches the courier's branch nearest to you, it is sorted onto a delivery person's route for the day and scanned as Out for delivery. A route can have many stops, so the parcel may arrive any time until the evening. It is not a promise of delivery that day — it means delivery was planned for that day.
Why it wasn't delivered
The scan after "Out for delivery" usually gives the reason. Common ones:
| Tracking message (wording varies by courier) | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Consignee not available / door locked | Nobody was at the address when the delivery person came. |
| Address incomplete / incorrect | The delivery person couldn't find the address or it was missing details. |
| Customer not reachable | The delivery person called the phone number on the parcel and couldn't get through. |
| Delivery rescheduled / customer requested future delivery | Delivery was moved to another day (sometimes after a phone call). |
| Cash not ready (COD) | For cash-on-delivery orders, payment wasn't ready at the door. |
| Undelivered, no reason / still "Out for delivery" | The route ran out of time, or the scan for the day hasn't been uploaded yet. |
If the status still shows Out for delivery late at night with no new scan, it often just means the courier hasn't recorded the day's result yet. Check again the next morning.
What to do next
- Check the tracking the next morning. Look up your tracking number on Track My Ship to see the latest scan and its message.
- Fix the reason if you can. If it says the address was incomplete or you weren't reachable, contact the courier with your tracking number to confirm your full address, a landmark and a phone number you'll answer.
- Expect another attempt. Couriers usually make another attempt, often on the next working day. Keep your phone on and someone available at the address if possible.
- Ask about collecting it. Some couriers let you collect the parcel from the local branch. Ask customer care if that is possible for your parcel.
- Contact the seller if you bought the item online — they booked the shipment and can follow up with the courier.
Don't let it turn into RTO
Couriers make a limited number of delivery attempts. If they all fail, the parcel is sent back to the sender, which shows as RTO (return to origin) in tracking. Responding quickly after the first failed attempt is the best way to avoid that. Read more in what RTO means in courier tracking.
If it says delivered but you didn't get it
That's a different problem — see parcel shows delivered but not received.
