In short: a good Indian delivery address has the receiver's full name and a reachable mobile number; the house or flat number, building and floor; the street; a well-known landmark; the area or locality; the city, district and state; and the correct 6-digit PIN code. Missing details are one of the most common reasons for failed deliveries.
The address, line by line
| Line | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name | The receiver's full name, as people at the address know them | Ravi Kumar Sharma |
| Phone | A 10-digit mobile number that will be answered, plus an alternate if possible | 98XXXXXXXX (alt. 97XXXXXXXX) |
| House / flat | Flat or house number, floor, building or society name | Flat 304, 3rd floor, Shanti Residency |
| Street | Street, road or lane name, plus sector or block if there is one | Lane 4, Old Padra Road |
| Landmark | A well-known place right next to you | Opposite City Hospital |
| Area | Locality, area or village | Akota |
| City and state | City or town, district (if different) and state | Vadodara, Gujarat |
| PIN code | The 6-digit PIN code for that area | 390020 |
The example is for illustration only — use your own details.
Details that make the biggest difference
The PIN code
Couriers use the PIN code to send your parcel to the right branch, so a wrong PIN code can send it to the wrong city or delay it by days. If you're not sure of yours, look it up with India Post's PIN code search on indiapost.gov.in, and make sure it matches the area — not just the city.
A phone number you'll answer
Delivery people often call when they can't find an address. If the number is switched off, belongs to someone who isn't there, or won't answer unknown numbers, the attempt may fail. Add an alternate number where you can.
A landmark
In many Indian neighbourhoods, house numbers alone aren't enough. A landmark that local people know — a temple, school, hospital, petrol pump or well-known shop — helps the delivery person find you quickly. "Near" is vaguer than "opposite" or "next to".
Flat, floor and building names
In apartment complexes, include the tower or wing, flat number and floor. For offices, add the company name and floor, and check whether reception accepts parcels.
Common mistakes
- Writing only the area and city, with no house or street details.
- An old address saved in a shopping app (check your saved addresses before ordering).
- Abbreviations only you understand.
- A PIN code from a neighbouring area.
- A nickname the security guard won't recognise.
- A number with a missing digit.
Before your parcel arrives
Once it's shipped, look up the tracking number on Track My Ship to follow it. If you notice a mistake in the address after booking, contact the courier (or the seller, for online orders) as early as possible with the tracking number — changes are much easier before the parcel is out for delivery. A good address is also the best protection against your parcel being returned to the sender (RTO).
